Did
you know that nearly 80% of all child restraints are used
improperly? The Carmel Police Department is the
place to go to be sure that you are using your child’s car
safety seat correctly. The Department has been selected as a Permanent
Fitting Station for the Automotive Safety Program,
developed by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA). Currently, 11 employees of the Carmel Police
Department are NHTSA Child Restraint Certified Technicians.
They will inspect your child safety seat, by appointment, free
of charge.
"Even if you feel confident that
you have installed your child safety seat correctly, you
should take advantage of this program," said Carmel
Police Officer R. Harris. "The manufacturers’
instructions just don’t adequately address all the potential
installation problems. I have had to make adjustments on
almost every child safety seat I have inspected, and in some
cases, new seats have been provided. We are happy to perform
this service in order to ensure the safety of our youngest
citizens."
According to Child Restraint Certified
Technician Ann Gallagher of the Carmel Police Department,
requests for inspections are multiplying rapidly. If you would
like to set up an appointment for this invaluable service, you
may call 571-2720 during business hours, or leave a
voice mail anytime at 571-2690 extension 7728.
