Songbook Academy brings nation’s top student vocalists, celebrity mentors to Center for the Performing Arts

Great American Songbook Foundation program includes three public events

Songbook Academy Finals 2018News coverage is welcome this week as the Center for the Performing Arts hosts the 10th anniversary Songbook Academy® summer intensive, the only youth arts program of its kind focused on the timeless musical standards of jazz, pop, Broadway and Hollywood. The academy is a key education initiative of the Center’s sister organization, the Great American Songbook Foundation.

Driven by their love of this classic popular music, 40 of the nation’s top high school vocalists – hailing from 16 states coast to coast – have come to Carmel to experience a week of workshops, masterclasses and mentoring from a team of professionals that includes five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein, Broadway stars Laura Osnes and Michael McElroy, and Grammy winners Melissa Manchester and Sylvia McNair. The 40 finalists include eight teens from Central Indiana.

Events open to the public include:

Public Masterclass - 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, The Palladium

Ten randomly selected participants experience one-on-one coaching live onstage from Feinstein and Laura Osnes, Tony-nominated star of Broadway shows including Grease, Bonnie and Clyde, Bandstand and Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
Admission FREE, tickets required.

Songbook Showcases - 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30-5 p.m. Thursday, July 18, The Palladium

All 40 national finalists perform solo, with 10 chosen to compete in the Saturday finals.

Songbook Academy Finals - 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20, The Palladium
