Operations Section

Assistant Chief Mark Gugel directs the daily operations of the Carmel Fire Department. Chief Gugel is a 22-year veteran of the Carmel Fire Department. He is a paramedic and has served as a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, and Training Chief for the department. Mark is a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame and spent his first two years of fire service with the South Bend Fire Department. Chief Gugel has the responsibility of managing 155 sworn personnel. The department divisions that Chief Gugel directs consist of the following:

  • Fire Suppression Division
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Safety and Training Division
  • Quartermaster Division
  • Planning Division

The Fire Suppression Division is responsible for providing direct services to the citizens of Carmel. Services rendered include:

  • Fire Suppression
  • Search and Rescue
  • Emergency Medical Services (Provided by Paramedics and EMTs)
  • Hazardous Materials Spill Mitigation
  • Technical Rescue Services
  • Extrication from vehicles and machinery
  • Water Rescue
  • Our Fire Suppression Division is divided into three shifts of 48 sworn personnel which operate on a 24-hour cycle. Each shift is led by a Battalion Chief and Executive Officer

The Fire Suppression Division Personnel operate out of six stations which are strategically located throughout the City of Carmel and Clay Township. Our apparatus include:
