Carmel CAN! is a volunteer initiative launched by Mayor Brainard, to recognize and coordinate community volunteers. Through this initiative, citizens looking for volunteer opportunities will be matched up with those organizations that are in need of volunteers.

Each month, volunteers working at various community events or with community organizations will be highlighted for their efforts in making our community a better place to live. Look for volunteer highlights and updates on Carmel’s monthly news show, "Connecting with Carmel" on Carmel Government Channel 16, the Carmel Newsletter, or the Carmel City Website!

SEASONAL OPPORTUNITIES:

Spring

Arbor Day -- Volunteers are needed to help plant trees in community parks. The annual tree plantings will take place at West Park and at the Parks Department Meeting House. Volunteers are needed Monday-Thursday, April 21-24th from 3-6 p.m. for planting and Saturday, April 26th from 9 a.m. -12 p.m. The official Arbor Day Ceremony will be Saturday, April 26th at 10 a.m. at West Park. Two shifts are available, from 6:30-9:30 a.m. for setup and 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for tear down. Volunteers are also needed to greet visitors at the market. Carmelfest -- Volunteers are needed to help with the Carmelfest Parade, sell Spark Buttons and assist with children’s games for Carmelfest 2008 on July 3rd and 4th. Volunteers are also need to help with the Reunion of the Survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, which will be held in Carmel during Carmelfest. In Carmel - 

ALS Association of Indiana -- Provides services for people diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease -- and their families. The group is seeking volunteers to assist with office support, computer work, data entry, compiling thank-you letters, filing and answering the telephone at its office in Carmel. Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation -- Volunteers are needed to help support the Parks by helping with Movies in the Park, Kids Koncerts, Shakespeare in the Park, Touch-a-Truck, Fall Clean-up days and Tour de Carmel. Volunteer duties vary, and there are a variety of shifts available. Also, consider joining the Trailblazers Club! The Trailblazers are ambassadors promoting and maintaining Carmel Clay Parks and Recreations trails and greenways for the benefit of the community. The Trailblazers meet periodically with interesting speakers and free food and gifts. Carmel Clay Public Library -- Adult volunteers are needed to staff the "gently used" bookstore in the library. Jobs include operating a basic cash register, stocking books and helping customers. Carmel Symphony Orchestra League -- The orchestra league is looking for new members to help support the symphony. Volunteers help with office work, audience hospitality, music outreach programs for all ages, and special fundraising events. Meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at the Clay Township John W. Clarian North Medical Center -- From giving a warm welcome to all those who walk through the doors or providing essential support to the Emergency Department, Volunteers are integral threads in assisting Clarian North achieve its mission to provide exceptional care. It's not necessary for prospective volunteers to have previous healthcare experience; rather an individual only needs a passion to serve others and a commitment to helping Clarian North make each and every guest visit positive. Clarian North is currently recruiting for the following positions:

First Impressions Ambassador: First Impressions Ambassadors have the important distinction of being one of the first representatives of Clarian North to greet visitors and guests. First impressions Ambassadors will leave a positive, lasting impression with all individuals through welcoming any who enter the doors with a warm greeting and a friendly smile. Service hours and days are flexible.

5th Floor Guest Relations Assistant/Bell-Hop: Volunteers serving as the 5th Floor Guest Relations Assistant will provide support to the Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care Units by Provide assisting and supporting all guests who enter into the 5th Floor waiting area. Assistants will personally escort all visitors and guests to the specific room location of a patient as well as assist guests and their families in packing up in preparation for discharge.

Community Caring -- Community Caring, together with its volunteers, is an advocate for senior citizens by serving their spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing. Community Caring, located at 11550 N. Meridian St. Suite 125 in Carmel, helps improve quality of life by connecting people with people. There are several services offered to Seniors: home cleaning, transportation, grocery shopping, yard work, simply a friendly visitor, etc. Volunteer time can be 2 hours a week or 2 times a month or whatever time volunteers have available. Community-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner -- Volunteers are needed to assist with this annual Thanksgiving Dinner for needy families in Hamilton County. To volunteer at the dinner contact Nancy Chance at Good Samaritan at (317) 773-5030.

Indiana Proactive Animal Welfare Inc. -- Indiana-PAW, an animal welfare education group is looking for volunteers to become "foster parents" and join its "Foster Roster" program. Meals on Wheels -- Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County needs businesses and organizations to Adopt-A-Route and allow their employees volunteer time off during the lunch hour to deliver hot meals to elderly and homebound residents. This is a great way to advertise your business to the community with a magnet on your employee's vehicle that shows they care. Individuals are also encouraged to volunteer. Delivering meals is a very rewarding volunteer experience. Meals are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. For more information about Adopt-A-Route and how to become a volunteer driver, please call (317) 776-7159.

Museum of Miniature Houses and Other Collections, Inc. -- The Museum is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1991 by Suzanne Moffett, Suzanne Landshof and Nancy Lesh that is filled with antique and modern dollhouses, miniature scenes, hand-crafted miniature art, and private non-miniature collections. The museum is located at 111 E. Main Street in Carmel. Volunteers are needed to staff the museum Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Volunteers only need to volunteer once a month. Senior Connects -- This student-managed volunteer organization establishes computer labs and offers computer training to senior citizens at independent living, assisted living, and other senior citizen facilities. Senior Connects is now accepting high school students and extraordinary junior high school students (age 14 or older) to help teach computer and internet skills to senior citizens. Agape Therapeutic Riding Center -- A non-profit center for special needs children and adults, Agape provides horses, equipment, facilities and helpers for riders with physical, mental or emotional challenges. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana -- Big Brothers Big Sisters is in need of volunteers over the age of 18 to serve as mentors. Volunteers can pick the day of the week that accommodates their schedules. Volunteers are needed for both site-based mentoring and community-based mentoring. Site-based mentoring involves meeting at a local or other designated sites to eat lunch, working on academics, or simply spending time together playing games or simply talking. Community-based mentoring includes helping with home work, attending sports activities, playing games, and just talking. Conner Prairie -- Conner Prairie is a large, open-air living history museum made up of four distinct historic areas, a modern museum center and over 800 acres of natural beauty. Conner Prairie volunteer opportunities are mutually beneficial to the museum and the volunteer amd we welcome those who would like to donate their time and talents. Easter Seals Crossroads – Parents Night Out – North -- Volunteers are needed to assist the Easter Seals staff of Parents' Night Out - North, which provides respite care for family members and primary caregivers of children with special needs ages six months to twelve years old. Respite care enhances personal and family health by providing necessary physical care and recreational activities for the children while offering parents and caregivers a well-deserved break. Parents' Night Out - North is held at Kids Kastle, 11552 Fishers Landing Drive in Fishers and takes place the third Friday night of every month. Friend to Friend -- The Hamilton County Mental Health Association is looking for volunteers for its Friend-to-Friend program, which matches a volunteer with a resident of a nursing home who has little or no contact with others outside the facility.
