Immediate
Chimney Cleaning Scam

Carmel, IN – Carmel
Fire Department has been alerted of a local telephone
scam. City residents have reported receiving telephone calls
from an individual claiming to be a Carmel Firefighter. The
caller states that under the Carmel City Code, there is an
ordinance that requires all residences in Carmel with
fireplaces and wood burning appliances to have their
chimneys cleaned annually. The caller then proceeds to
encourage the resident to schedule an appointment with a
particular chimney sweeping business.
The Carmel Fire Department
does not use any type of telephone solicitation or promote
any one business. Furthermore, there is no city ordinance
requiring residents to have their chimney cleaned.
However, it is highly recommended by the Carmel Fire
Department that residents with wood-burning fireplaces and
wood-burning appliances have their chimneys inspected and
cleaned annually by a certified chimney sweep.
Chimney fires occur when creosote builds up in the chimney
while burning wood. The super heated gases can ignite the
creosote build up in the chimney. This type fire can lead to
damage to the lining of the chimney, allowing heated gases
to escape within the chimney chase, which is often
constructed with wood framing materials. Once the heated
gases come into contact with the wood, a fire will occur.
More information on chimney care and maintenance can be
found by going to the National Chimney Sweep Guild web site
at www.ncsg.org or
by contacting a certified Chimney Sweep in your telephone
directory.
