Carmel Police Department Receives Fourth
Accreditation
Carmel, IN- The
Carmel Police Department (CPD) has recently been
re-accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies,
Inc (CALEA) for practicing excellent law enforcement
standards. This is the department’s fourth accreditation by
the Commission. CPD is one of only 9 law enforcement
agencies in the state of Indiana to gain a
CALEA accreditation
award.
To receive accreditation, a department must prove compliance
with over 459 recognized law enforcement standards.
Throughout the assessment process, a three person team
trained by the Commission reviews the policies and
procedures of the department, interviews personnel, and
seeks public input to assess the agency. By gaining
accreditation, the department has proven to operate on a
higher level of standards for the field of law enforcement.
These standards include the areas of operation,
administration, and technical support activities. The Carmel
Police Department will be accredited for the next three
years, after which, they must apply for re-accreditation.
“Our accreditation status is very important to us and is a
viable part of the Carmel Police Department. The values and
objectives of CALEA are
shared and supported by the Department as well as the City
Administration. They enable us to provide a higher quality
of law enforcement services to the Carmel community,” said
Chief Michael Fogarty.
“The department is a wonderful asset to our community, and
the City of Carmel is proud to recognize their
re-accreditation. The Carmel Police Department, in being
compliant with CALEA
standards, continually upholds the values and principles set
by the City of Carmel, making it a safer environment for
each resident. This accreditation is proof of the excellent
standards practiced, and the efforts to continually improve
the department. The City of Carmel is privileged to be
served by such dedicated professionals,” said
Mayor Jim Brainard.
“This agency belongs to an elite group of public safety
agencies in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Barbados
that have received this prestigious, international award.
Citizens in your state deserve to know that these agencies,
like schools and hospitals, have taken extraordinary steps
to demonstrate their professionalism and pride in delivering
quality law enforcement service to their communities,” said
Sylvester Daughtry, Jr. Executive Director of the
CALEA.
The accreditation commission is founded by the International
Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization
of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the National Sheriff’s
Association and the Police Executive Research Forum. Chiefs,
Sheriffs, elected officials and community leaders
representing the four organizations comprise the Commission.
