Carmel Expand Recycling
Facilities
Carmel, IN – The City of Carmel has
expanded its recycling services for residents of Carmel and
customers of Carmel Utilities. Another recycling location
has been added where recyclable papers, cardboard, aluminum
and metal cans, plastics and bottles will be accepted. This
new recycling option is being offered at the current
Household Hazardous Waste Collection site at 901North Range
Line Road.
“We have continued to look for ways to help residents have
less impact on the environment. We are buying hybrid
vehicles for City departments when possible, we are studying
the feasibility of using wind to power part of the
wastewater treatment plant and expanding our recycling
facilities helps toward that effort as well. While there are
other places to recycle in the community, we want to make
sure the city is offering another convenient option to
residents,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.
Please remember that plastic, glass and metal containers
need to be rinsed and free of liquid and debris before
recycling.
Other Recycling Options in Carmel and Hamilton County
As the community becomes more focused on recycling, we want
to remind Carmel residents of different options that are
available for recycling and convenient and safe disposal of
hazardous household products.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site
For hazardous waste that is environmentally harmful, Carmel
residents and customers of Carmel Utilities can use Carmel’s
Household Hazardous Waste Disposal (HHWD) program, which
offers a safe and convenient way to discard hazardous
household materials at no charge.
HHWD also accepts home
medical supplies that should not be placed in the trash.
Improper disposal of items such as old paint or garden
fertilizers presents a great environmental hazard, which
could impact the community as a whole. This is especially
true in Carmel because we rely totally on groundwater as our
water resource.
“I am proud of our collection program. The tons of hazardous
waste that is kept out of our water supply because of this
program grows each year,” said Mayor Brainard. “Our water
supply and our community are cleaner and safer because of
this progressive endeavor.”
To make the process more convenient, you may call the center
at 571-2624 to verify that they are accepting the types of
waste you need to dispose. Brochures listing acceptable
items are available at the site and at Carmel City Hall. For
more information about the
HHWD program, visit the website
at:
http://www.carmel.in.gov/services/HHWD.html
Drop-off hours at the Household
Hazardous Waste site are:
Tuesday - Friday - 8 a.m. - 5
p.m.
Saturday - 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Sunday & Monday - Closed
Please do not drop-off recyclables when
collection site is closed.
Prime Life Enrichment Recycling Site
The current recycling facility at
Prime Life Enrichment will
remain in operation. The City of Carmel partners with the
center which provides a 24-hour Recycling Drop-off Site
behind its building located at 1078 Third Avenue SW (next to
the Carmel Ice Skadium.) It is a well-lit area with
surveillance cameras.
The site currently accepts aluminum cans, corrugated
cardboard, newspapers/phone books, and white office papers.
For more details about the collection of these items, visit
the Prime Life website at:
www.primelifeenrichment.org/recycling/recycle.htm
Schools
Other recycling options can be found where residents see the
green and yellow “Abitibi” recycling bins in the parking lot
of Carmel Clay Schools. Abitibi bins are for paper products
such as magazines, catalogs, newspapers, office paper, and
grocery bags. Items that are dropped off must be dry and
free from foreign objects such as plastic, twine, metal or
glass. All Abitibi bins located at Carmel schools are
available for any resident to use as a drop off recycling
site. Funds raised from these recycling bins at the schools
are used for PTO projects.
Neighborhoods
Residents can also take advantage of the curbside recycling
service offered, for a small fee, by their neighborhood
garbage collector.
Hamilton County Site
Citizens that live outside the City limits of Carmel in Clay
Township or anywhere else in Hamilton County, can drop
recyclables or hazardous household waste at the Hamilton
County Household Hazardous Waste Center. It is located
immediately west of the Hamilton County 4-H Fair Grounds on
Pleasant Street: 1717 Pleasant St. Suite 200 Noblesville, IN
46060 317-776-4005.
The Hamilton County center accepts all types of household
consumer products that are generally considered hazardous or
environmentally unsafe. Material collected at the center
will be recycled, disposed of in a safe manner or be
available for reuse in the free swap shop. Other services at
the center include recycling containers for glass, plastic,
metal, cardboard, and grass clippings. Free mulch provided
by the City of Noblesville is also available for the public
to take. To view a list of specific materials and hours of
operations for the
Hamilton County Household Hazardous Waste
and Recycling site visit the following website:
