Committee Recommends 2008 Funding
Carmel, IN - The Carmel Arts Advisory
Committee met earlier this month and voted to recommend the
Support for the Arts funding for this year. The 2008 budget
included $675,000 to be distributed among local arts
organizations. This is less than one percent of the City’s
budget.
The Carmel Arts Advisory Committee meets with the Mayor each
year to review requests, discuss the state of the arts in
Carmel and recommend funding from the Support for the Arts
Fund. The eight-member committee includes Ed Manetta, who
served for 27 years as Chairman of the Visual Arts
Department (Fine Art & Music) at St. John’s University in
New York and also as an Associate Fine Arts Professor at the
Indiana University Herron School of Art & Design; Rick
Sharp, City Council President; Evan Lurie, owner of the
Lurie Gallery of Fine Art in Carmel and whose family has
owned art galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Miami;
Cherie Piebes, owner of Artisan Masterpiece in Carmel; Bill
McEvoy, former president of Kingswood homeowners
association; Diana Cordray, Carmel Clerk Treasurer; Dee
Thornton, Senior Sales Executive at Xerox Corporation; and
Vicki Duncan Gardner, former newscaster and community
volunteer.
“Funding arts organizations in our community is a strong
economic development tool for the City of Carmel. Since the
creation of the Arts & Design District in Carmel, more than
350,000 people visit the district each year. That number
grows as more merchants locate in the district and
additional public events are added to the calendar,” said
Mayor Jim Brainard.
The committee recommended the following distribution of
funds for 2008.
