February 26, 2008 Burglary and Arrest On Monday February 25, 2008 at approximately 2:00 pm a Carmel Police Officer, who was working a traffic enforcement project, came across a burglary in progress. The Officer observed a female running away from an apartment building in the area of Arbor Dr. and she was being chased by a black male. The male suspect, later identified as 26 year old Shantell L. Smith of Indianapolis, fled the area in a white 1996 Honda. He was spotted a short time later by Carmel officers that were heading to the area to assist. He was stopped and taken into custody without incident. According to the victim’s statement, she was returning to her apartment at The Lakes of Carmel. As she entered her apartment she noticed that the door was broken and she was confronted by a black male who was pointing a handgun at her. She dropped her shopping bags and ran out of the building. Shantell Smith was charged with 4 felonies and 1 misdemeanor and was transported to the Hamilton County Jail where he is being held on a $28,500 bond. After further investigation the gun was determined to be an “air-soft” BB gun. Charges:
