IndyGo Commuter Express Bus Service Well-Received in Carmel

Carmel, IN – IndyGo’s Commuter Express (ICE) began offering express bus service to downtown Indianapolis from Carmel on Monday, March 17th. It was well-received by the community with approximately 106 people riding the new service on its first day of operation.

“We are very pleased with the initial ridership on these buses and we were told by IndyGo that for a first day and holiday it was an impressive turnout. This is an opportunity to provide our residents with excellent transportation alternatives for commuting to work while reducing the negative impact on our environment. The 106 passengers equate to 212 less commutes, eliminating the emissions from those vehicles going to and from downtown Indianapolis,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “We appreciate the opportunity to partner with IndyGo to offer this beneficial commuting option.”

This service is intended to relieve traffic congestion on the roadways and give Carmel residents who commute to downtown Indianapolis for their jobs another transportation option. The buses are motor coach buses featuring large comfortable seats with reclining capabilities and foot rests. The buses also are accessible for persons with disabilities including customers using wheelchairs. In the near future, the buses also will have bike storage capacity, so that those wanting to ride to or from the bus stop will be able to do so adding even more alternative transportation options for commuters.

The Carmel express service is funded for three years by a $1.8 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) federal grant, which provides 80 percent of the funding with a 20 percent local match provided by the City of Carmel. The $2 bus fare, paid by riders of the new service, contributes toward the 20 percent local match.

The ICE service will operate Monday through Friday from the Meijer parking lot located on Carmel Drive near U.S. 31. The cost is $2 each way. The first morning bus departs at 6:15 a.m. and the last at 8 a.m. IndyGo will continue to monitor the schedule, and adjust as needed.

Designated Pick up and Parking at Meijer Store: Enter off of Pennsylvania Street and park in the designated area west of the store (see yellow star).

The downtown bus stops consist of the following (look for the ICE Carmel Route bus stops signs):

  • Pennsylvania and Ohio
  • Pennsylvania and Washington
  • Pennsylvania and Henry
  • Delaware and McCarty
  • Illinois and Market
  • Illinois and New York

A detailed departing and returning schedule is below:

The $2.00 bus fare may be paid by cash (exact fare only) or an ICE Single Ride Pass. When boarding, riders should give their fare to the coach operator or drop their pass into the fare box. Single Ride Passes can be purchased online at http://wwwjoyy.indygo.com/ or in person at the IndyGo Customer Service Center located in the Indianapolis City Market.
