Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing

Carmel, IN – Each spring and fall Carmel Utilities flushes a percentage of area fire hydrants. This activity cleans sediment out of the water mains and tests the system to ensure it is working properly. This service is done between 9:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. to minimize the impact on the water customers. The spring fire hydrant flushing began on April 21st and will continue for approximately three weeks depending on weather. The flushing is done by City Utility workers in uniform and with Utilities marked vehicles.

While a hydrant is being flushed, the nearby residents may experience a drop in water pressure. This is normal and to be expected. Additionally, there may be some discoloration of the water after the flushing. This discoloration is temporary and not harmful. Because the flushing is performed at night, most customers will probably not notice any change to their water service.

Carmel Utilities provides reliable and low-cost water and wastewater services to more than 29,000 households in Clay Township.
