Ribbon Cutting for Illinois Street Extension

Carmel, IN – A ribbon cutting ceremony was held today signifying the completion of the Illinois street extension. This section of Illinois Street is a new road designed to improve north/south traffic flow west of US 31. Now, the north leg of Illinois Street starts just south of 116th Street and extends north to 146th Street, incorporating Oak Ridge Boulevard.

The project consists of a divided boulevard section with new curb and gutters, enclosed storm sewers, multi-use paths, a new 2-lane roundabout, and decorative retaining and screening walls. Illinois Street is part of the City’s transportation plan, developed in the mid-1990s as part of the Carmel Clay 2020 Comprehensive Plan.

The beginning stages of this corridor at Illinois and 116th opened in September 2005. Oak Ridge Boulevard was also improved in 2005 to a boulevard style roadway in anticipation of its future connection to Illinois Street. The roundabout at 126th Street and Illinois Street opened in August 2006 after closing the intersection completely in order to do a “hyperfix.” The project was completed in record time and for less money. The segment from Clarian North Hospital to 126th Street was opened in November of 2006. The corridor will eventually connect from Spring Mill at 98th Street to 146th Street when the project is complete.

“This new road gives drivers another option to Spring Mill when traveling along this important corridor. It was also very important to get this road done prior to any US 31 construction. This project, like all our road improvements, is part of Carmel’s concerted effort to stay ahead of the needs of our residents and businesses,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.
