Where:
Carmel Clay Veterans’ Memorial at Freedom Circle (3rd

Who:
Mayor Jim Brainard will be joined by city officials to

Background:
In August of 2002, the CCVMC was founded to pursue a
site, find an appropriate design and fund the construction
for the Veterans’ Memorial. The 10-member Board of Directors
consisted of representatives from the American Legion, the
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Military Officers
Association of America (MOAA). The CCVMC worked with a few
members of the Carmel Arts Council, Les Olds on the Carmel
Redevelopment Commission and CSO Architects Inc. in the
search for a suitable design for the memorial.
The chosen team consisted of Sculptor William Wolfe of Terre
Haute, Scott Art Castings, and Sincerus Bronze Art Center
and Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf both of Indianapolis. A
ground breaking ceremony was held on the site in the fall of
2004. Flags recognizing the five uniformed military
services, an MIA/POW flag, and the American flag we’re
raised in early 2005. After 18 months of fund raising
through donations and engraved brick paver sales, the CCVMC
raised enough money to pay for the $350,000 project. An
unveiling and dedication ceremony for the statue was held at
the Freedom Circle last October.
