EVAN LURIE FINE ART GALLERY to
Celebrate
its Grand Opening in Carmel’s Arts and Design District
Carmel, IN – The
EVAN LURIE FINE ART
GALLERY will celebrate its Grand Opening with an
invitation-only event on Saturday, September 29th from 6-11
p.m. in the Carmel
Arts and Design District. Gourmet catering is being
provided by Great Cooks & Company, Naked Tchopstix, and
Rene’s Bakery. Live music will be performed by popular Jazz
violinist Cathy Morris and her trio.
The following work will be featured at the opening:
International artists--painter Jorge Santos (Portugal),
sculptor Oriano Galloni (Italy), painter Larissa Morais
(Russia), painter Luis Sanchez (Mexico) and painter Xevi
Vilara (Spain). American artists--painter John Lahuis
(Florida), sculptor Ted Gall (California), sculptor Tom
Brewitz (Minnesota) and painter Dale Nally (Kentucky). Jorge
Santos, Larissa Morais and Dale Nalley will attend the
gallery opening to share in the excitement.
The EVAN LURIE FINE
ART GALLERY in Carmel is the Lurie’s first gallery
in the Midwest. The first Lurie Gallery opened in New York
City 25 years ago. They currently operate galleries in Los
Angeles, California and Miami, Florida. The
EVAN LURIE FINE ART
GALLERY represents internationally established and
emerging artists with heavy European and Latin American
influence. Evan Lurie specializes in establishing both
residential and corporate art collections and he works with
public art programs in many different cities.
The gallery is located at 30 West Main, on the north side of
the street between the Carmel Music Store and the Carmel Old
Town Antique Mall. The Lurie Building is a public/private
partnership between the
Carmel Redevelopment Commission and Stenz Development
Corporation. It is a mixed-use building comprised of the
Evan Lurie Fine Art Gallery on the ground floor, second
floor office space, and “The Renaissance” penthouse
residential condominiums on the third and fourth floors.
“I am very excited that this day has finally come. We have
worked with Evan during the past few years to fine tune our
vision for the
Carmel Arts and Design District with the Lurie Gallery
serving as a predominant focus. Other outstanding galleries
will be more easily attracted to an area where another
well-known gallery has already been established and we
appreciate the fact that Evan shares our vision, put his
faith and trust in us and located in
Carmel’s Arts and
Design District. The merchants currently in the district
can tell you that the energy and vibrancy continues to
escalate as more and more customers and diverse businesses
are drawn to the district. The Lurie gallery will impact
that trend exponentially,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.
The Arts and Design
District is vital to the economic development of this
area. Already, more than 400,000 people visit the area each
year and, as more galleries, restaurants, boutiques and
events come to the area, this number will continue to grow.
Public art has also been added to enhance the Arts
District’s cultural amenities. Major events scheduled for
the area this year include the International Arts Festival,
held last weekend, “Fall into the District” to be held on
Saturday, October 27th and the “Holiday in the Arts
District” on Saturdays in December. Other events and
celebrations will be held in the district throughout the
year.
The EVAN LURIE FINE
ART GALLERY is a beautiful addition to the
district with its distinctive architectural style. The
building is a four-story masonry structure designed by CSO
Schenkel Shultz. The intricate window, masonry and canopy
architectural details compliment the atmosphere of Old Town
Carmel. The design was based on the national chain of S.H.
Kress variety stores built during the first half of the 20th
century. Samuel Kress, also an avid art collector, erected
stores throughout the nation which aspired to be beautiful
buildings that were more ornate and elegantly appointed than
the stores of his competitors. The Kress variety stores have
since come to be highly regarded by architectural scholars.
The Lurie Building recalls the rich legacy of civic pride
and artistic ideals of early 20th century Kress variety
stores.
The Renaissance Condominiums, housed in the
Carmel Arts &
Design District, are designed to combine the
sophistication of a cosmopolitan lifestyle with the
conveniences of suburban living. The name, “Renaissance,”
was chosen for the four penthouses because of the exciting
rebirth now being experienced in the heart of Old Town
Carmel. Each townhouse residence features a private elevator
and two enclosed private parking spaces. The spacious 3000+
square foot penthouse condominiums include many high quality
features such as a grand entry foyer with stately columns
and granite floors, elegant kitchen design with stainless
steel appliances, granite countertops, porcelain tile floors
and a raised ceiling.
For the past several years, as part of its commitment to the
Old Town area, the City of Carmel has invested in excess of
$20 million in improvements, including new sidewalks and
curbs with brick accents, historic street lights and signs,
upgraded storm sewer and water systems, and street
improvements. Brick sidewalks were installed along with
underground wiring for street lights along Main Street and
Range Line Road in the Old Town area. The addition of the
Arts and Design District archways help focus attention in
the central part of Old Town where art galleries, boutiques,
restaurants, specialty shops and the Indiana Design Center
will be located.
The
CRC is responsible for the redevelopment efforts of both
the Old Town and City Center projects. In addition, the
CRC manages other public-private partnerships where city
land is being redeveloped to improve economic growth of
targeted areas of Carmel. The
Mayor and City Council appoint members of the
CRC. Current members include president,
Ron Carter, Carolyn Anker, William Hammer,
Rick Sharp and Jeff Worrell.
