Carmel Police Department
and Carmel Clay School System Awarded Secure Our Schools
(SOS) Grant
Carmel, IN –
The
Carmel Police Department and
the Carmel
Clay School System were recently awarded a matching
grant in the amount of $188,256 from the U.S. Department of
Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services
(COPS) Secure Our Schools (SOS) Grant Program. With the
assistance of these funds, the Carmel Police Department will
work in partnership with the Carmel Clay School Corporation
to acquire and install digital video systems in all
elementary school buildings and upgrade existing systems in
the high school and middle schools.
“The safety of our students is and always has been our
utmost priority. This grant will allow us to purchase the
latest technology in digital video camera systems, which
will be a significant safety benefit for our schools,” said
Superintendent Dr. Barbara Underwood.
Along with the installation of the digital security system,
the grant funds will also be used to network the school
security camera system with the public safety emergency
operations center and the City of Carmel public safety
mobile command vehicle.
“The equipment funded by this grant will help us to enhance
safety during any future incidents,” said Carmel Police
Chief Mike Fogarty.
The Carmel Police Department was one of only 152 police
departments in the United States and the only police
department in Indiana to be awarded this grant. The total
dollar amount awarded under the COPS SOS Grant Program was
$14.8 million.
“In Carmel, keeping our children safe has always been our
number one priority. Our police department and school system
have worked hard to strengthen their working relationship,
including assigning a school resource officer to the high
school and each middle school. This grant money will allow
us to provide an even higher level of service with advanced
technology,” said
Mayor Jim Brainard.
