Carmel Mentioned in Wall Street Journal Article
CARMEL, IN - In today’s Wall Street Journal (Thursday, June 28, 2012) on page A2 in the article “Cities Outpace Suburbs in Growth,” Carmel is shown as a suburb that is growing faster than its adjacent larger city (see chart with attached article). The article looked at the 51 largest metropolitan areas in the United States from July 2010 to July 2011 and noted that in most large metropolitan areas, “many U.S. cities are growing faster than their suburbs for the first time in decades…” However, this is not the case in Carmel.
“We have all the advantages of a suburb, such as beautiful upscale neighborhoods, great schools and short commutes. Yet, Carmel has chosen, unlike most suburbs, to build a pedestrian friendly, urbanized, sophisticated and architecturally significant downtown. The redevelopment and growth of the Carmel Arts & Design District and Carmel City Center, including The Center for the Performing Arts has attracted many residents and added a great deal of vibrancy to the area,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.
