Safety Division

Carmel Fire Department's Safety Officer (SO) has the responsibility to ensure that the fire department's 149 sworn personnel are healthy and accident free. There are two sectors that track personnel safety: Health/Wellness, and Operational Safety.

Health/Wellness consists of the physical health and fitness of the firefighters. Each sworn employee attends a mandatory physical check up with a rigorous personal health history which is administered by Public Safety Medical of Indianapolis.

Safety is also a major concern at emergency scenes. The SO also responds to working fires to add an extra set of eyes to ensure the crews are working safely and that all hazards have been identified. The SO inspects each members' personal protective equipment, i.e.... turn out gear and SCBA's (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus).
