Haz-Mat 40, CFD's hazardous response vehicle.

Hazardous Materials Operations

Director: Battalion Chief Rick Dufek
Phone: (317) 818-3400

The Carmel Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team operates with 13 officers and 13 firefighters who have completed an 80 hour hazardous materials technician training class. Some team members have gone on to further their training by attending the National Fire Academy chemistry of hazardous materials, hazardous materials site practice class, Weapons of Mass Destruction class, as well as a detonation recognition class.

The Carmel Fire Department has transportation of hazardous materials through it's jurisdiction at all hours of the day and night, because of this the department's Haz-Mat team has dedicated Sta. 46 as a tactical response house. This means the department's Haz-Mat response vehicle and the personnel at that station are assigned there due to their training. The Haz-Mat director, Battalion Chief Rick Dufek, and the shift Haz-Mat trainer Lt. Gary Brandt, are constantly applying for, and receiving grants related to training classes, equipment, detection devices, and personal protective equipment.

The Carmel Fire Department also is a member of the Hamilton County Hazardous Materials Task Force, which is a combined effort of all fire departments in Hamilton County to coordinate and train together for scenarios that are outside the capabilities of one fire department. The task force has a Haz-Mat response vehicle maintained by Noblesville Fire Department, Carmel Fire Department's vehicle comprises some of the other resources. The task force also responds to municipalities that don't have any Haz-Mat response resources.
