The Carmel Fire Department Inspections provides the community with inspection services for commercial business. Inspections also answers questions regarding the Carmel City burning ordinance, State of Indiana burning regulations and fire prevention related topics.

Our jurisdiction is bordered by 96th street to the south, 146th street to the north, River Road to the east, and US 421 to the west, which totals approximately 50 square miles. The area includes several multi-story office buildings reaching to the height of eight stories, places of worship, retail, light industrial, medical and many educational facilities. The Carmel/Clay School system has ten elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school, and one freshman campus which is under construction. Each school is inspected on a yearly basis. The goal of the Inspections is to inspect all commercial buildings once a year. Currently there are over 3250 businesses in our jurisdiction.

Inspections also has a seat on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) which meets once a month. This committee reviews new commercial construction and new residential development. Inspections works closely with the Department of Community Services (DOCS) which issues building permits for the jurisdiction. Before new commercial structures are allowed to be occupied, an inspection from each entity is required. Our division enforces 2003 Indiana Fire and Building Codes along with numerous National Fire Protection Association standards that have been adopted by the State of Indiana.
