Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing

Smoke Testing schedule - Sept 2019CARMEL, IN – Carmel Utilities will resume smoke testing of the sewer lines in the northern part of the city tomorrow, Tuesday, September 17. This project will take approximately 3-4 weeks, weather dependent. Hours of testing will be Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Personnel on site each morning will be knocking on homeowners’ doors the morning of each testing to inform anyone at home. A Carmel firefighter and a Utilities employee will be on site each day to respond to any concerns from citizens. Signage will also be placed around the neighborhoods affected.

During smoke testing, you may see smoke in or near your home. If you experience smoke in your home, you have something in your plumbing that needs attention. Please look for crews outside and notify them so they can help you identify where the smoke entered your home. Normally, it’s something simple like a dry plumbing trap or a bad wax ring on a toilet. Smoke in the home during this time could indicate that sewer gas could enter the home and needs to be addressed.
