Are extra points given for having all of the certifications?
Currently only applicants with prior military experience receive a bonus to their final application score.
As a current firefighter, do I have to go through the entire hiring process?
Yes, at this time it is the policy of Carmel Fire Department that regardless of prior experience, all new hires will complete the entire hiring process as well as complete Carmel Fire Department Recruit School which includes fire training and EMS training.
Depending on the state certifications held by the recruit, testing at the state level may not be required.
Yes, you need a valid CPAT in order to complete your application.
Do I need to have the fire academy complete before applying?
As a new hire CFD will require everyone to go through their current academy regardless of prior experience.
Do you only hire current firefighters/paramedics?
No prior experience or certification are required to be hired.
No matter what prior experience an individual has, every recruit will be sent through CFD’s recruit academy where they will receive FF 1-2, EMT-B, hazmat ops and awareness, rope and water basics, etc.
Do you take laterals from out of state?
We welcome all applicants; however, all new hires are required to go through our full recruit school and will earn a unit number based on performance in academy.
All pay and benefits according to our contract will start at new hire rate.
How long would I have to be a 'float'?
It is typical for a probationary firefighter to ‘float’ between our 6 stations on the same crew for the duration of their probationary year.
Upon completion of their probationary year, they become eligible to participate in the department’s bid system. At which time, they are able to bid a permanent position if one is available.
How old do I have to be to apply?
You must be at least 21 years old to be hired. However, because it is a 1 year list, we allow individuals to apply and test if they will have eligibility during the one year list.

A candidate must be hired before their 40th birthday, unless you are currently in PERF. If you have retired from a full 20 years of U.S. Military career, please reach out to discuss your situation.
Is recruit training provided for me?
Training is provided for you. As a recruit, the schedule is Monday through Friday; typically, 6am to 4pm (times subject to change). Recruit school is approximately 25 weeks, 17 weeks of fire training and 8 weeks of EMT training.
Is the 'time on the job' transferred with a lateral move?
Time on the job is not transferred. However, if you are in the Indiana PERF program, your time in that program does count. It will not improve your seniority with Carmel Fire Department

Is there a polygraph?
Upon receiving a conditional offer from Carmel Fire Department, a polygraph will be completed by the candidate.
