City of Carmel Sister Cities
Sister Cities were created to promote peace through people-to-people relationships. They offer the flexibility to allow connections to form between communities that are mutually beneficial and take on issues that are most relevant to the partners.

In 1992, international exchange activities began in Kawachinagano, Osaka, Japan. Among them was full-fledged International Promotion Project called, “Kawachinagano City Internationalization Policy Plan.” One of the results of this activity was a proposal to form a Sister City relationship. Carmel Junior High and Carmel High school already established a long-term Sister City school relationship with Seikyo Gakuen, located in Kawachinagano City, Japan. (read more) |
The agreement between former Mayor Jim Brainard and Mayor Andris Ravins of Jelgava was facilitated by the Latvian Ambassador to the United States, Maris Selga, during his visit to Carmel in October of 2021. The mayors will be exploring opportunities to establish closer ties between the cities in such areas as education, culture, business, and public services. (read more) |

The Sister City relationship with the City of Cortona, Arezzo is an agreement designed to promote international goodwill, understanding, student educational exchanges and expanded business relationships between the two cities and their respective nations. (read more) |

Former Mayor Jim Brainard joined an international virtual meeting with Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari, who serves as Mayor of Visakhapatnam, to sign a memorandum of understanding that formally establishes the relationship. The focus is exchanging ideas and information in a wide variety of areas of mutual interest, including business, trade, culture, education, healthcare, government, technology, and exploring the growth of business and trade relations between the two economies.
